What I love about Dad
What I love about Dad
A story of gratitude
Wehad a massive family Christmas event in 2021, where all my kids, their partners and grandchildren got together, all eleven of them, with me making it a dozen. It was a great event, bringing together three generations of my family here in Australia.
One of my kids presented this little mini-book, “What I love about Dad” It has sections for personalised messages on each of its 50 pages. I felt immensely grateful, turning the pages. Each page has a space for the child to write personalised words to their dad. I felt ecstatic reading them, and I want to share them here on my medium channel.
Below are the 50 pages; my daughter’s handwritten words are in italics.
- I love your personality.
- We always have the best time when we relax together.
- When I was little, I loved to go to events with you.
- I’m impressed by your networking skills.
- I love getting your advice on my career.
- You have the most handsome laugh.
- Thanks for encouraging me to be confident.
- I’m glad I got your confidence.
- I love how you always say, “chin, cha chingy”.
- I never get tired of your energy levels.
- I love how you never get tired of my emotions.
- If I had to describe you in one word, it’d be driven.
- I learned to push myself because of you.
- I love how you are 100% every day.
- Yeah, you were right about not overreacting.
- I admire your dedication to your kids.
- I love the pleasure you take in learning.
- Sometimes your ability to be so organised amazes me.
- I love that you taught me to appreciate my siblings.
- You are the best dad ever.
- I wish I had known you when you were in your 20s.

- You gave me the courage to speak my mind.
- I love how you never assume the worse.
- I love how you always are there.
- I hope you get to unwind with me in Qld soon.
- If you were a car, you’d be a Volkswagen buggy/beetle.
- You could win a talent show with your cleaning skills and remembering numbers.
- It means so much that you showed me how to read roadmaps.
- I loved to play chess with you when I was little.

- Thank you for loving us.
I LOVE YOU, DAD
In hindsight, I did all these to my four children without thought, often subconsciously. The ultimate thanks need to go to my own father, Thomas, who brought me up with confidence, unknown to me, to be a good father one day. I just did to my kids what he did to me. Honestly, I did not know any better or any other way. Kudos to him and not to me.
My gratitude goes to my dad.
